What is the difference between a channeler and a medium?

The word “channeler” has gained popularity in the last few decades as numerous “channeled” books have been published. In general, we could say that a channeler asks no questions of the spirit but simply provides a mouthpiece, believing that the spirit is the final authority.  In some cases, the channeler is in a trance state and may have no recollection of his encounter with spirit. The word “medium” has a much longer history and is usually associated with the gift of clairvoyance.

Whatever word we use, it is important for the medium or channeler to realize that it is she and not the spirit who is responsible for the information received.  Neither should blindly accept whatever is said by spirit, but should rely on his or her own sense of discrimination. If being in the spirit’s presence causes discomfort, the medium or channeler should consider whether to accept or reject the information received.
